Scrutineer Pro Tip: Understanding the Solid Green LED

Many scrutineers mistakenly assume that a solid Green LED at neutral means the ESC is in illegal timing mode. When a Sanwa ESC is connected to an SSL receiver (RX-472, RX-482, RX-491, RX-493), the Green LED stays solidly lit to indicate an active SSL telemetry link, while the Blue LED flashes to confirm zero-timing Blinky Mode. As long as the Blue LED is pulsing, the unit is 100% compliant.

Step-by-step setup using the onboard SET button or Program Box Gen2.

Method A: Using Physical ESC SET Button

No transmitter or external programmer required at the pit table:

  1. Turn transmitter ON, ensuring throttle trims and sub-trims are set to 0.
  2. Connect charged battery to the ESC.
  3. Power ON the ESC while holding the SET button until the LED cycles into setup mode.
  4. Press SET repeatedly until reaching Mode 4 (Boost) (indicated by 4 Blue LED flashes).
  5. Press and release SET to check setting: 1 Green flash = #1 Disabled; 2 Green flashes = #2 Enabled.
  6. If set to #2, hold SET until LED turns Red, then tap once to toggle to #1.
  7. Power cycle the ESC. Verify that at neutral the Blue LED is flashing.

Method B: Using Sanwa Program Box Gen2

Recommended for fast trackside programming and telemetry setup:

  1. Connect Program Box Gen2 to the ESC data port via the 3-pin COM cable.
  2. Power ON the ESC.
  3. Navigate to SETTING DATA > VIEW & EDIT.
  4. Scroll down to parameter M04 BOOST.
  5. Set M04 BOOST to OFF (or #1).
  6. Press ENTER to write data (WRITE OK? -> YES).
  7. Disconnect Program Box and power cycle the ESC. Confirm neutral Blue LED flashes.

SSL Protocol & Transmitter Isolation

Can a driver disable Blinky Mode remotely from their Sanwa M17 / M12S transmitter during a race?

Technical Verification: It is technically IMPOSSIBLE to enable Boost via radio.

Sanwa engineered the ESC firmware and SSL (Sanwa Synchronized Link) protocol so that Mode 4 (BOOST) is strictly classified as a Non-SSL Function. It has no corresponding CODE AUX register in the wireless RF stream. It can ONLY be changed physically via the ESC SET button or Program Box Gen2.

Sanwa SV-D2 Cross-Flashing Guide

How to convert the drift-spec SV-D2 into a competition-legal touring/off-road Blinky ESC.

The Engineering Background

The SV-D2 shares identical core hardware, microcontroller, and power MOSFET board architecture with the flagship Super Vortex Gen2 PRO. However, native SV-D2 drift firmware (D2104100) does NOT blink its status LED at neutral, regardless of parameter zeroing.

Sanwa officially notes on their website that the Super Vortex Gen2 PRO firmware can be flashed directly onto the SV-D2. Once cross-flashed, the SV-D2 functions identically to a Gen2 PRO: all race software features are unlocked, and setting Mode 4 = #1 produces the continuous Flashing Blue LED required for full ROAR / IFMAR scrutineering approval.

Preparation

Update Program Box

Ensure your Program Box Gen2 is running the Gen2 PRO box firmware (PBOXA001_0103001).

Required File: PBOXA001.PRO (v01.03.001) in root of FAT32 microSD.

Firmware Setup

Load Gen2 PRO Code

Copy G2103002.PRO and G2103002.PRG (Ver. 01.03.002 SXR) onto the microSD card.

SD Card Directory: Place both files in root. Do not rename files.

Flashing

Execute Flash Procedure

Connect Program Box to SV-D2, power on ESC, select PROGRAM UPDATE > confirm G2103002 > press YES.

Verification: Progress bar completes without error. Power cycle ESC.

Verification

Activate Blinky Mode

Set Mode 4 = #1 (Disabled). Recalibrate throttle neutral and endpoints.

Visual Proof: Blue LED flashes steadily at neutral. 100% legal for spec racing.
