An Electronic Speed Controller (ESC) regulates the high-current power delivered from the LiPo battery pack to a 3-phase brushless motor based on throttle commands from the radio receiver.
Modern competition ESCs utilize MOSFET banks to switch current through motor stator phases (A, B, C) in microsecond intervals. In sensored systems, Hall effect sensors detect precise rotor angle to deliver smooth low-RPM control without cogging.
By firing phase currents before the rotor reaches alignment (commutation advance), an ESC can drastically increase motor RPM and top speed. This is typically split into Boost (progressive RPM advance) and Turbo (wide-open throttle advance).
To eliminate expensive software arms races and keep racing fair, global sanctioning bodies (ROAR, IFMAR, EFRA, BRCA) mandate Blinky Mode (Zero-Timing) in spec/stock classes (21.5T, 17.5T, 13.5T). All electronic timing is locked to 0° advance, visually confirmed by a flashing LED at neutral.

Timing circuits and calculations are physically omitted or permanently locked out in base microcontroller firmware.
